Set SRDF mode

Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) facilitates the data replication from one storage array to another through a storage area network or Internet Protocol (IP) network.

About this task

This procedure explains how to set the mode of operation for an SRDF configuration. SRDF modes determine the following:

  • How R1 volumes are remotely mirrored to R2 volumes across the SRDF links.
  • How I/O operations per second are processed in an SRDF solution.
  • When acknowledgments are returned to the production host that issued a write I/O command.

Before you begin:

See Roles and associated permissions to determine the user roles that can perform this task.

The adaptive copy mode value Enabled: WP Mode is not available when:

  • Either side of an SRDF device pair is on an array running PowerMaxOS 10 (6079).
  • The R1 side of an SRDF device pair is on an array running PowerMaxOS or HYPERMAX OS.

SRDF devices cannot be set in the non-Metro SRDF mirror to operate in Synchronous mode.

You are not able to perform SRDF/Metro control actions at the storage group level on the SRDF/Metro pairs in a standard SRDF view. You are not allowed to perform standard SRDF actions on the SRDF/Metro leg in a standard SRDF view. If you are viewing a storage system that is not associated with either side of the pair of interest, you must go to the view of the relevant storage system.

This operation can be invoked from multiple locations in the Unisphere user interface (Device Group > SRDF Group, Device Group > SRDF Pairs, SG All Details > SRDF tab, PROTECTION dashboard) . Depending on where the operation is invoked, some of the steps below may not apply.

To set SRDF mode:

Steps

  1. Select the storage system.
  2. Click Protection to view the Protection dashboard and select SRDF from the Protected Storage Groups section of the summary panel.
  3. Do the following, depending on whether you want to perform the operation at the group level or pair level:
    • Group level:
      • Select a group, click An icon showing three dots arranged in a vertical row, signifying a menu with more options, and select Set Mode. For storage groups with Celerra FBA emulation, a warning dialog is displayed indicating that the storage group may be managed externally using eNAS. To continue, click OK, otherwise click Cancel.
      • Select the Use 2nd Hop option if including the second hop of a cascaded SRDF configuration (not applicable if the hop2 is SRDF/Metro).
      • Select SRDF Mode, Adaptive Copy Mode, and AC Skew to set the type of SRDF session modes.
NOTE: Set SRDF Mode to Active to convert SRDF/S mode to SRDF/Metro mode. Set SRDF Mode to Synchronous to convert SRDF/Metro mode to SRDF/S mode . See Convert SRDF/S to SRDF/Metro or SRDF/Metro to SRDF/S for more information.
      • Select Use Consistent to set a consistent transition from asynchronous to synchronous mode.
    • Pair level:
      • Select a group, click An icon showing the letter i, and click the number next to SRDF Pairs.
      • Select one or more pairs, click An icon showing three dots arranged in a vertical row, signifying a menu with more options, and select Set Mode.
      • Select SRDF Mode, Adaptive Copy Mode, and AC Skew to set the type of SRDF session modes.
      • Select Use Consistent to set a consistent transition from asynchronous to synchronous mode.
  4. Click Advanced Options. Select the advanced SRDF session options and click OK.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • Click Run Now to perform the operation now.
    • Expand Run Now and click Add to Job List to add this task to the job list, from which you can schedule or run the task at your convenience. For more information, see Schedule jobs and Preview jobs.
